Working With Rails

Carlos Brando (carlosbrando) is hooked on programming and currently employed as Chief Technology Officer (CTO) at Amanaiê, a company that creates, produces and distributes social applications. He has been developing software for over twelve years, starting out in Visual Basic and moving on to C, C++, Java, C#, and now Ruby. He has worked for a number of companies, including Portugal Telecom Group, AT&T Latin America, DirecTV, SKY, VISA and Surgeworks Inc..

Carlos has one of the best-known Rails blogs in Brazil. He is active in the Brazilian Rails community and participates in several open source projects. He has presented at various Ruby-related events in Brazil, including two editions of Rails Summit Latin America. He also wrote the first two books about Rails 2.1 and 2.2, and he led the translation of the Why’s Poingnant Guide to Ruby into Portuguese.

He has worked on the following open source projects:

• Remarkable, a framework for rspec matchers that supports macros and I18n.
• Autotest Notification, a gem that sets the autotest to send messages to software as Growl, LibNotify, and Snarl, displaying a window with the results.
• Custom Resource Name, which makes it easier to develop a Rails app with localized URLs.

He’s also responsible for the Rails Podcast Brazil, a weekly podcast with the latest news about Ruby on Rails.

In addition to his professional interests, Carlos and his wife volunteer as instructors for the deaf and mute. He regularly teaches sign language and does interpreting.
