In college, I counseled department secretaries while they abandoned their IBM selectrics for wordprocessing and spreadsheeting on an Osborne computer, and an Okidata dot matrix printer. Ever since then I have been chasing after the latest sofware tech. I worked in Congress using dBaseIV. Then built apps with MS Access, and later transitioned to MS Foxpro, which WAS a great tool to build shrink-wrapped db apps. Those days toiling beneath the shadow of MS, with the rest of the M-F 8-7p workforce are over, as I now work with open source apps in finance and GIS, and with tools like Ruby and Rails. My time is consumed with preparing to open a competitive bakery in DC using opensource to run the business. Wish me luck. Come and visit AMRUG in DC if you get the chance.
