There isn’t “the most efficient IDE”. What it counts is what you feel most confortable in.
I like NetBeans 6 very much, probably would have tried TextMate if it was available on linux.
Try them for a short time then use whatever you like the most.

Add my vote for Aptana RadRails. It’s java based so it works on multiple platforms and the Aptana team has been making big strides in its development. I really like it now more than ever.

I checked out with Aptana and it needs to register for a trial version, how i wish there’s a free IDE with intellisense feature like Netbeans maybe.

I’d go for Aptana Studio from http://www.aptana.com. It’s a a java app, so i use it on both Windows and Linux machines. I use Subclipse, which is intergrated for versioning via SVN. Although it is an IDE it is not one of this big bloated IDEs if you configure Perspectives to your private needs.

To recall your question: I don’t know about efficiency – it’s fun to work with – efficiency starts in Rails by script\generate’ing models, controllers, scaffolds, etc.
Just my $0.02.

Netbeans 6.0 will do. Just need to tweak things specially when you are running Linux/OsX system. Not that major tweak but will help a lot. Netbeans do have a complete documentation for it. If you are running MAC use TextMate. It’s as powerful as Netbeans but less resource needed.

One thing i like about Netbeans is the Format-CODES.

I use RadRails v0.7.2 , it uses a lot of system resource and most of the time i end up with a Not Responding Message ,but this could be because i use to have lot of files openend in the editor at a time or because of my systems hardware limitation , well i am planning to upgrade my radrails version soon.

i think it’s not the rad rails version. it’s the jvm that is eating all the resources. try unloading some projects. to prevent the IDE to index the project.

textmate for sure if you have a mac.

I was using RadRails for a time but it was too buggy and kept crashing. Once they fix the bugs, it should be a good IDE.

Aptana does have intellisense like behavior plus all sorts of other things for SVN, CSS, XHTML, etc. etc. It has tools for simplifying all the rails generators and starting up a webBrick or Mongrel development server is as simple as clicking a button. I haven’t found it to be buggy and Aptana Studio Community is a no-charge product. I really don’t see how you can go wrong to at least give it a try. They have some good video tutorials as well.

Good luck in your search.

I ‘d vote for aptana as a plugin on eclipse, this gives the flexibility of eclipse and the benefits of radrails. I had problems using apatana and then loading plugins (editors and designers) on top.

The only OS worth working on… OS X :)
And the only Editor…. TextMate :)

I am very biased.

We use TextMate for our RoR development. But I (personally) think it’s still pretty lacking when compared to IDEs for other languages. The refactoring support in Eclipse or IntelliJ really does make a difference in the quality of the results that people produce in Java. I see a few votes for Aptana and mention of an Eclipse plugin. Does it do refactoring?

Yes Aptana has some refactoring. This link talks a bit about it and points to the current list. http://www.infoq.com/news/2007/11/aptana-studio-10
Aptana also releases updates frequently, constantly adding features or bug fixes. I’m very happy with this IDE.

If u have mac, textmate, but is not an IDE is a powerfull text editor and have a lot of fatures.

For windows I think NetBeans is the best.

I dont use and IDE but text editors and I personally prefer VIM7 with rails.vim and project.vim plugins . But if you are a windows fan… then you might try Intype which is trying to become a clone for Mac’s Textmate.

you could get it at Intype

BTW. Not to offend anybody but I feel RADRAILS/Eclipse is pretty damn slow…

OSX, Textmate, and Terminal – the trick with TextMate is to know all the hotkeys.

For a terminal I actually use iTerm – it has more intuitive tabbing features.

Linux, gedit with lots of plugins and Terminals of course.

I used to use aptana, but I got tired of it eating up all my ram.

Gedit with a few plugins can pass as a poor mans textmate and its fast and only uses about 35M’s of memory.
