Frequently Asked Questions

What is the benefit of the popularity charts?

Apart from being just a bit of fun it allows you to see at a glance who are important members of the community. Answering such questions as:

  • Who are the people making popular code libraries I might want to use?
  • Who are the people producing publications that are recommended reading?
  • Who should I see at an event?
  • I'm looking for training in my area? who is highly recommended?

The charts are just the start of this system. There are many possibilities here and we'd like to hear feedback with where you would like to see this go.

How often are the popularity charts generated?

Every 24 hours.

How are they constructed?

The more recommendations a person has the higher they climb up the charts for that particular chart. Each chart corresponds to a count of the number of specific attributes that a recommendation has.

So for example, in the case of the 'Popularity by Code' chart the number of recommendations are added up where people have said that they used code by that person.

Please note that at this time, the overall ranking is not dictated by the number of boxes checked in an individual recommendation but purely by the number of recommendations from individuals.

What effects a persons popularity rating?

Recommendations. See above also.

Can the results be manipulated?

Like any system there is always room for manipulation and we actively try to minimize the chances of this happening. If you do suspect something fishy or have a suggestion on ways to further remove such possibilities drop us a line.

I have a suggestion for how this could work better
